Short Films are a weird and wonderful subsection of the film universe. They come in all shapes and sizes, all types of content and genres, simple stories or complex. They are made by Oscar Winning Directors and Students alike, their budgets range from hundreds of thousands of dollars to a couple pizzas to feed the volunteer crew. They serve many different purposes for different filmmakers but here are a few of the reasons we love short films over here at Crushed Rockets.
Honing the Craft
Short Films provide the filmmaker with a chance to develop as filmmakers. We get to try new things, we get to frame things in a new perspective, we use short films to get better at what we do on our own terms. This can mean such a variety of things from new camera and lighting techniques, directing actors, stretching or managing a budget. There is so much to learn as filmmakers and short films help us to get better at communicating.
Finding Our Voice
As filmmakers we all have stories and images that we want to present in our films. We all have a style to develop. It can be daunting to try to find ways to present those parts of ourselves and the world around us in the moving image. The only way to do this well is to do it often. We use our voices frequently so that we can refine it and be able to communicate better with our audience. Short films are forgiving. You can express something in a short that doesn't necessarily define you as filmmaker and storyteller. All artists need a platform to refine their work.
They Open Doors
Short Films tend to fall in the "labor of love" category when it comes to money. Often times cast and crew are donating their time to be part of something creative and unique. Our small budgets often go to feeding, transporting and some small amount of props and wardrobe to make the film look right. It might seem like a strange business investment, spending money on something that is unlikely to ever render a financial return.
However, that is not the end of the story with short films. They become a filmmakers ticket to the next stage. Through Film Festivals we enter into bigger arenas with other filmmakers; other people who can help us in our journey. The film becomes proof that we can deliver compelling images and moments on screen. Eventually they lead us closer and closer to making feature length films.
